Jesus Christ: Your GPS for Life

“We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete.” (Hebrews 12:2 CEV)

When I’m driving, I tend to get distracted easily. My wife constantly says, “Rick, keep your eyes on the road!” One time I got so distracted I actually missed a flight to a speaking engagement because I missed the turnoff to LAX. By the time I drove to Canada, I figured I had missed a turn at some point.

Some of you have spiritual ADD. It’s even easier to get spiritually distracted than physically distracted, to get your eyes off the Lord. Some of you have started down the road to recovery, but you’ve relapsed into your old patterns of grief, guilt, shame, habits, hurts, and hang-ups because you took your eyes off the Lord.

Remember when Peter was walking on water? As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he was doing the impossible. But when he took his eyes off Jesus and looked down at the water, he sank. The reason why some of you are sinking today is that you’ve got your eyes on your problem, on the circumstance, on your difficulty. You’ve taken your eyes off the Lord.

For centuries sailors used the Polaris principle. That means they would look for the North Star to navigate across the seas. The reason they always kept their eyes on the North Star is because it never changes. They could navigate based on something unchanging in their life.

You need a North Star in your life. You need something that never, ever changes. That rules out every human being, because people change. You have to have something that doesn’t change. Of course, these days we don’t need the North Star because we have GPS. Because it’s connected by satellite to an unchanging point of reference, then we can figure out where we are, where we need to go, and how to get there.

Everybody needs a GPS for life. And that’s what Jesus Christ is! While everything else around you is changing, Christ will always be your unchanging point of focus. “We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete” (Hebrews 12:2 CEV).

Talk It Over
- What are your hang-ups, problems, or regrets that keep you spiritually distracted?
- What do you need to change about the time you spend with the Lord so that you are able to keep Him as your focus?
- List or talk about the truths you know about God’s character. Which of those unchanging traits do you need to rely on today?
